Established in February 2008, Solar Jooce is a social enterprise, dedicated to improving the quality of life of rural communities in Nigeria that have little or no access to electricity. In 17 days (starting May 26, 2010) Solar Jooce drove across all 36 states in Nigeria to replace kerosene lanterns with solar lamp/phone charging units. The expedition was tagged SOLAR FOR THE MASSES.
Solar Jooce aims to empower rural dwellers by creating practical awareness for the potential of solar power in transforming their lives, and to underline the fact that fossil fuels such as kerosene are dangerous to health and the environment.
A long-term objective for Solar Jooce will be to identify and select hardworking, illiterate [or barely literate] rural women for training as basic Solar installers & troubleshooters.
This will create jobs for an unlikely segment (women, poor people), spread the use of solar energy amongst the rural populace, and begin to lift rural areas out of a needless cycle of poverty.
